EXTENDED FREE CHILDCARE ENTITLEMENT IN OVERSEAS LOCATIONS

1. In overseas locations the MOD provides services (or access to services) that, so far as is reasonably practicable, conform in type, scope and standard to that required by legislation in England (but paying due regard to the equivalent legislation in the Devolved Administrations).

2. The 2006 Childcare Act provided for 15 hours of childcare per week for 38 weeks of the year for 3 and 4 year olds free of charge. In overseas locations the MOD currently delivers this entitlement through places at MOD-provided settings or through access to the MOD Overseas Nursery Allowance.

3. The 2016 Childcare Act provides for an extension of the current entitlement and offers an additional 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year of free childcare for children that are eligible, with effect from 1 September 2017.

4. The additional 15 hours will be available to families where both parents are working (or the sole parent is working in a lone parent family) a minimum of 16 hours each per week. Parents each earning £100,000.00 or more do not qualify for the additional entitlement.

Plus, get involved with dino-tastic workshops on the 1st floor overlooking the water.  Excavate for dinosaur bones, mould your favourite dinosaur, get creative with designs to be projected on to a dinosaur and take a photo with a baby dinosaur.

Saturday & Sunday: 11am – 5pm

Please note, the workshop area is first come first served and could be busy at times meaning that some activities may not be available. Activities offered are for a mixture of ages, not all will be suitable for very young children.

NPOWER LAUNCHES 'EVERYDAY HEROES FIX' NEW TARIFF

npower have launched ‘Everyday Heroes Fix’, a new tariff exclusively for employees of the emergency services, NHS and Armed Forces, who hold either Blue Light Card or Defence Discount Service memberships. The tariff is on average npower’s most competitive deal* and fixes energy prices until December 2018, offering these everyday heroes a great deal on their energy and protects them from price rises until the end of next year.

The tariff is exclusively available to Blue Light Card or Defence Discount Service members, regardless of whether they are a new or existing npower customer, pay by Direct Debit or on receipt of bill, as long as they manage their account online. The npower offer is available by logging on to bluelightcard.co.uk or defencediscountservice.co.uk.

Anne Chappell Smith, Head of Partnerships at npower, said: “Our new Everyday Heroes Fix is a first-of-its-kind tariff which has been created to give our best price to the nation’s unsung heroes. We wanted to come up with a great product for military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, ministry of defence and healthcare providers to recognise their special contributions to our community.

“Should they wish to choose our most competitive tariff, these everyday heroes will benefit from a fix deal, greater price certainty and security to help plan and budget their energy costs over the course of the next 18 months.”

Tom Dalby, Head of Defence Discount Service said “We are extremely pleased that npower is recognising our everyday heroes.  Those in the Emergency Services, NHS and Armed Forces work hard for our communities and within our communities and it is great that npower, as an energy provider, are recognising what these wonderful people do.”

WIN £500 WORTH OF KIT BY JOINING THE BFBS CADET TAKEOVER

Forces Radio BFBS is challenging cadet members and units worldwide to submit 10-60 second videos that capture their activities.
And now it’s getting competitive as every video is in with a chance of winning £500 worth of kit from The Cadet Kit Shop.
Entries are open now until Friday 1st September 2017, when the winning video will be chosen by the Forces Radio BFBS judges.
The short films are published with the #CadetTakeover hashtag online on the www.forces.net website and Forces Radio BFBS’s social media channels.
Hundreds of air cadets have already taken part, and Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, Commandant ATC, has supported the initiative with a video that’s been viewed more than 50,000 times on Facebook.
The BFBS Cadet Takeover aims to raise the profile of local units and its members, illustrate the benefits of joining a cadet force, and foster inter-unit competition.

This also brings ownership of a key part of our radio and digital content and develops the digital skills of young people. Examples of videos could include parades, cadet tutorials, or ‘How To’ guides.

Tips for shooting videos and details of how to send them to Forces Radio BFBS are available online. Before submitting a video, cadets must obtain authorisation from local unit officers and parental consent.

The Cadet Unit Consent Agreement form, the BFBS Cadet Takeover Competition Supplementary Rules, and a pdf link with the full competition prize, are all available online at: http://forces.net/radio/join-bfbs-cadettakeover

And don’t forget you can also nominate a ‘Cadet of the Week’ for BFBS’s Access All Areas programme on Sundays 10-1pm (UK) – just email access@bfbs.com or cadets@bfbs.com.

TAX FREE CHILDCARE - REPLACING CHILDCARE VOUCHERS

Tax-Free Childcare will be available to millions of working families across the UK, and over time it will replace childcare vouchers, which will close to new entrants from April 2018. Voucher schemes remain open to existing members.

Eligible parents with children under 12 (under 17 for disabled children) will be able to set up an online childcare account to pay their childcare providers directly. For every £8 parents pay in, the Government will add £2, up to a maximum contribution of £2,000 per child, per year (£4,000 per year for disabled children). To qualify, parents must be in work, this includes self-employment, and each expected to work a minimum of 16 hours per week and earn no more than £100,000 per year.

Using the Childcare Checker, parents will be able to find out which providers have signed up in their area. The scheme will gradually become available to different age groups from 28 April 2017 with all eligible parents being able to access the scheme by the end of 2017.

Parents who have registered with the ‘keep me updated’ tool will be notified when they become eligible.

Childcare providers have a pivotal role in Tax-Free Childcare. They need to sign up so that parents can use Tax-Free Childcare to pay them; thousands have already done so.

To find out more about the new and existing offers, including the introduction of 30 Hours free childcare from September 2017 for eligible working parents and how they can help you, go to the Childcare Choices website at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk where you will find the childcare calculator www.gov.uk/childcare-calculator to help you compare the government’s childcare offers and check what works best for your family.

MOD personnel based within the United Kingdom will have the same access to these new Childcare Choices as any other citizen, in line with the Armed Forces Covenant. Since 2013 the Ministry of Defence has been working closely with other government departments to ensure that these changes to childcare choices can be mirrored, so far as it is reasonably practicable to do so, for entitled MOD personnel based outside the United Kingdom. Full details of the required changes or additions to MOD policies will be published shortly, once the changes have been published on the Government’s Childcare Choices webpage.

Alternatively, email: DCYP-DCYP-Mailbox@mod.uk for further information.

FORCES RADIO BFBS PROGRAMMES SHORTLISTED FOR INTERNATIONAL RADIO AWARDS

Four documentaries made by presenters and producers from BFBS have been named as finalists for the 2017 New York Festivals World’s Best Radio Programs Awards.

The content explores a range of subjects, all with a military theme, and are recognised for both content and production values.

Nicky Ness, Director of Forces Broadcasting and Entertainment, said: “I’m delighted for the team at BFBS to be recognised once again by the New York Radio Festival juries. We pride ourselves in our creativity and in being able to spend care and time crafting programmes that tell the extraordinary stories of our unique audiences, whether serious or comedic.

We had a particularly strong slate of entries for 2017 and I am so proud that our nominations will also champion the UK Armed Forces on a world stage as a result.”

The uplifting and candid story of Afghanistan veteran Cassidy Little – Coming Home, produced by Will Warren, has been nominated in both the Best Interview and Heroes categories in New York.

The Vulcan Documentary, produced by Richard Hatch and Hal Stewart, which tells the story of The Avro Vulcan Bombers in an engaging and entertaining way, is nominated in the History category.

The Sitrep Iraq Enquiry, which was presented by Kate Gerbeau and Christopher Lee, edited by Josella Waldron and produced by Mary Wilton, investigates why Tony Blair’s government decided to go to war in Iraq. This hard-hitting 30-minute analysis programme is a finalist for the Best Talk/Interview Special category.

Damn the Torpedoes is an audience-inspired, military-themed comedy sketch show that began crawling out of the water onto land early in 2014. Who Dares Grins – The Best of ‘Damn The Torpedoes’ is a compilation from the past five episodes of the hit comedy, produced by Alison Pritchard and Richard Hatch and is nominated in the Best Comedy Special category.

Listen to all of the shortlisted programmes in full via the ‘On Demand’ Radio section at www.forces.net/radio.
